about

Oprichnik, an epos with a running time of almost 1 hour spanning all kinds of genres. This album proves épong’s production skills in every direction; in combining elements of experimental electronics, bombastic post-rock and meticulously programmed drums, épong manages to get away with grandiose synthlines by interspersing them with adventurous rhythm sections.
Épong infuses modern avant-garde club-music with his signature heavy and emotional soundscapes. Working in filmmaking, filmscoring and music, we can definitely hear his sensibility towards telling emotional stories throughout Oprichnik.
This album was almost entirely made during long nighttime production sessions often ending when the sun was already out. Coming home from parties or nights out with friends, épong will often get back into his cellar studio to try and finish a track or make a new one. Tracks like Monk were finished on a single night and when asked what he was singing on Frank De Tank, he answered, “I don’t remember”. These particularities of his nighttime production process infused Oprichnik with a dark, moody and sometimes bordering dissociative atmosphere. These vibes resonate with the often destructive and hedonistic environment of Brussels’ modern club culture.
