about

This is the third album in our Urgent Music series, where we give artists a sociopolitical theme to work around. Where the past two compilations centered around urgency and assemblage respectively, this one tries to think through referential irony within contemporary musical production.

Through this little musical think tank we tried to tackle the broad consequences of irony in music. Does our preoccupation with referentiality close a political space? If alternative music isn’t occupied with being alternative, what politics do we offer? There is a political unclarity in the ironic touch, where references become tongue-in-cheek and meme-culture builds layer upon layer of in-jokes upon our contemporary sound world. But on the other hand, does this fun attitude not break through the elitist seriousness the underground tends to hold? Does it offer a more equal perspective, or is it an essentialization of cultural elements?
